I don’t do this often, but today I’d like to go on a slight tangent to tell you about something I love.

If you didn’t know, I’m a senior at Penn State right now, and if you asked me what I loved most about it as my time here rapidly comes to an end, I would passionately, unequivocally say THON.

The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, affectionately known as THON, is a yearlong fundraising effort for pediatric cancer that culminates this weekend with a 46-hour, no sitting, no sleeping dance marathon.

Every year, my organization, Tapestry Dance Company, joins more than 350 Penn State organizations with one goal in mind: conquering childhood cancer.

Since 1977, THON has partnered with the Four Diamonds Fund at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center. THON helps make it possible for the Four Diamonds Fund to assist children being treated for cancer and their families at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hopsital through superior care and comprehensive support. THON also contributes to innovative research that impacts children around the world. Last year, we raised a record breaking $10.6 million to aid in conquering childhood cancer, making THON the largest student-run philanthropy in the world.

And although the magnitude of the money raised, the sheer multitude of students involved, and the countless hours spent on this noble cause are quantifiable, it is so much more than the sum of these parts.

So today, Friday February 15, kicks off the weekend of my last THON as a Penn State student. I will be moraling a dancer (Long story short, over 700 students dance for 46 hours, which involves no sleeping or sitting. They each have a moraler assigned to boost their morale. That’s me!)

Every penny counts, and if you are so inclined, I would be overjoyed if you could join me in supporting the kids and dancers at THON! Ninety-two percent of the money raised at THON goes directly to the Four Diamonds Fund, an incredibly high efficiency by charities’ standards.

One day we will dance in celebration, until then we will dance for a cure.
